Afterwards, outside, in the garden, leaning against the car, vomiting until he was retching nothing but bitter fluid, Nick had the clearest impression that he had heard the old man’s voice raised above the roar and crackle of the blaze. But that was impossible. He looked down at his shoes. He was covered in blood but had no memory of pulling the old man backwards and out through the window. It was as if his mind had been cauterized, burnt clean by the horror of Reardon’s eyes—the expression of terror that filled them when he realized what had been done to him.

He had tried to get him into the backseat of the car, but the old man had gone into shock, trembling violently, his limbs jerking puppetlike. In the end, too exhausted to struggle or think, Nick had propped him up against a wheel, then covered his upper body with his jacket. It was only then that he remembered the other guy. Bittaker. Because who else could it be? He pulled the gun out of his waistband and backed away from the body, looking around at the garden, the twisted trees and tangled overgrown bushes lit orange by the blazing fire.

It was Reardon’s voice that brought his head round. The jacket had fallen over his legs, and he had raised his hands to his bloody chest. His fleshless jaws parted, and his tongue struggled to form words. But it was the eyes that Nick couldn’t bear. He raised the gun and pointed it straight at the old man’s head. He couldn’t pull the trigger.
